Woman in custody fight claims Chippewa heritage

A Texas physician on trial for breaking child custody orders is claiming to be a part of the Pembina Little Shell Band of Chippewa, an unrecognized group that has landed in legal trouble throughout the nation.

Elizabeth Rohr fired her attorney and began acting in her own defense as jury selection began. She asked jurors about their views on knowledge of American Indians.

The Pembina group has claimed sovereignty in several states and has been implicated in insurance, theft and fraud scams. The group is not considered to be legitimate and is not connected to any other Chippewa tribes.
