Navajo chapter signs joint powers deal with state

The Newcomb Chapter of the Navajo Nation signed a joint powers agreement with the state of New Mexico on Wednesday.

The agreement is the first of its kind in New Mexico. It allows the chapter to obtain funding directly from the state without the money passing through the Navajo Nation central government.

The agreement is possible because the Newcomb Chapter is certified under Navajo law. The chapter is the only one in New Mexico with Local Governance Act certification.
