Taos Pueblo water rights settlement proposed

The state of New Mexico announced a proposed settlement of Taos Pueblo's water rights.

The settlement was reached with the tribe, the state, the town of Taos and local water users. It calls for the tribe to receive about 5,900 acre-feet of water a year.

Taos Pueblo Gov. James Lujan Sr. called the settlement fair, the Associated Press reported. Congressional approval is needed to finalize the deal.
