Jerry Kammer, a journalist who got his start covering the Navajo Nation and the Hopi Tribe of Arizona, won a Pulitzer Prize for work on disgraced former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham.
Kammer started his career as an assistant editor for The Navajo Times in 1974 where he learned about the Navajo-Hopi land dispute. That led to his 1980 book, The Second Long Walk, about the influence of coal-mining interests on the dispute.
Kammer continued writing about the dispute for The Arizona Republic before moving onto Copley News Service, where he covered Cunningham's corruption scandal. He is sharing the Pulitzer for national reporting with The San Diego Union-Tribune and The New York Times.
