Federal Recognition
Sandy Lake Band of Ojibwe seeks recognition

The Sandy Lake Band of Ojibwe is seeking local support for its federal recognition.

The tribe is based on a 32-acre reservation that was established by an executive order in 1915. But the Bureau of Indian Affairs failed to recognize the tribe after the passage of the Indian Reorganization Act in 1934.

The tribe later became affiliated with the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe but maintains is separate status. The tribe asked the city of Otsego to support its recognition bid but the city won't act on the request.
