Native students can wear feathers for graduation

Native students at Westwood High School in Mesa, Arizona, will be allowed to wear eagle feathers during graduation ceremonies.

The school had told about a dozen students from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community that they couldn't wear the sacred symbol of achievement and honor. But after meeting with tribal leaders, the school changed its mind.

Other high schools in the district are expected to allow feathers at graduation. Nearly half of the students at Westwood are Native. About a third of students in the entire district are Native.
