One of last fluent Wasco speakers dies at 91

Madeline Brunoe McInturff, one of the last three fluent speakers of the Wasco language, died on July 11. She was 91.

McInturff was born on the Warm Springs Reservation in Oregon. She worked for the Indian Health Service before retiring in 1984 to focus on tribal language preservation.

The tribe hopes to keep the language alive. Only one tribal member, a woman in her 90s, and a man from the Yakama Nation in Washington still speak Wasco.
