Southern Ute Tribe opposes GOP sheriff candidate

The Southern Ute Tribe of Colorado is opposing a Republican candidate for Archuleta County sheriff, saying he doesn't respect tribal sovereignty and failed to investigate police harassment of tribal members.

Pete Gonzalez used to be the chief of police in Ignacio, a town within the boundaries of the Southern Ute Reservation. He is seeking the GOP nomination for county sheriff in Tuesday's primary.

As head of police, he was sued by tribal members who said guns were pointed to their heads while they were handcuffed. The town settled the case for $20,000.
