A county official in Oregon with ties to the One Nation United group decried as racist by tribal leaders is facing a recall effort.
Douglas County Commissioner Marilyn Kittelman has repeatedly spoken out against the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians. She has opposed the tribe's land-into-trust request and was accused of making disparaging remarks about Native Americans.
Donald Keogh, the organizer of the recall petition, calls Kittelman a shill for One Nation. She denied any connection to the group but her adviser is David Jaques, the group's president, and she attended the group's Washington, D.C., convention with Barb Lindsay, the group�s national director and a noted tribal foe.
Kittelman then invited Lindsay to speak at county meeting. Lindsay expressed many of the same views as Kittelman, although The Roseburg News-Review said her statements on the tax impact of the land-into-trust application were legally impossible due to the state's laws.
Keogh has other complaints about Kittleman's work. She deleted references to abortion from a county health brochure and fired a museum director.
