House committee holds field hearing on languages

The House Education and Workforce Committee held a field hearing on Native language preservation in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Thursday.

The committee heard from tribal leaders and Native language experts. They emphasized the link between language and culture and the need to include Native languages in the educational system.

Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon (R-California), the chairman of the committee, said only about 20 Native languages will remain viable in the coming decades, the Associated Press reported.
