Sycuan Band prepares to reopen San Diego hotel

The Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians will reopen the 96-year-old U.S. Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego on October 15.

The tribe bought the hotel for $45 million in December 2003. The hotel has been undergoing some renovations as the tribe adds some cultural touches.

Sculptures by Johnny Bear, a member of the San Pasqual Band of Kumeyaay Indians, will be installed in the hotel. Bear's five 32-inch-tall bronzed sculptures represent the sustainment of the Kumeyaay faith, culture, tradition and territory.
