Guilty pleas in Kickapoo corruption scheme

Five of the seven people charged in connection with stealing more than $900,000 from the Kickapoo Tribe of Texas pleaded guilty.

The seven include former chairman Raul Garza, who was the only Indian charged. He pleaded guilty to one count of theft.

Charges against a lawyer who represented Garza amid a leadership dispute within the tribe were dropped altogether. That leaves only tax evasion charges against Isidro Xavier Garza, a non-Indian who is not related to the former chairman.

Raul Garza's Kickapoo name is Makateonenodua, or black buffalo. He was courted by convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff but declined to be signed on as a client.
