Opinion: Racism still prevalent in world of sports

"The use of Native American mascots and imagery should be banned from Americas sporting traditions. Although many teams have changed their mascots to become more politically correct, many still use these racist slogans and symbols to represent their teams.

Of all minority groups, only Native Americans are the ones people still depict in stereotypes and caricatures. Society has left caricatures of African Americans by the wayside, but blatant forms of discrimination toward Native Americans are still prevalent.

The University of Illinois argues the use of Chief Illiniwick as their mascot is to honor Native Americans. They claim to use traditional dances and chants in the mascots routines.

But there is nothing traditional about the mascot, from the outfit to the dances, according to many Native Americans. They find these types of acts offensive because they make a mockery of their culture, traditions and religious beliefs.

Alumni, presidents and students claim to honor the culture rather than commit acts of racism. But racism still continues to be a product of these mascots."
