Indian veterans cemetery bill up for Bush's signature

The Native American Veterans Cemetery Act cleared Congress last week and is ready for President Bush's signature.

The bill authorizes tribal governments and tribal organizations to receive funds for veterans’ cemeteries. Currently, only states can receive such funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

"Native American soldiers who have served or perished protecting our country in the line of duty deserve to be honored and buried at home," said Rep. Tom Udall (D-New Mexico), one of the sponsors.

About 20,000 American Indians and Alaska Natives serve in the military. By the end of 2006, there will be more than 181,000 Native veterans.
