Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe celebrates recognition

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts celebrated its federal recognition on Thursday,

The tribe's recognition became final on Wednesday after going through the Bureau of Indian Affairs process. The tribe is the second in the state with federal status.

Gov. Deval L. Patrick (D) made a surprise appearance at the tribe's gathering in Mashpee. “The governor was in the area, and wanted to stop by and personally congratulate the tribe on recognition,” a spokesperson said.

The tribe is looking for land for an initial reservation.
