Fairbanks Native Association addresses teen issues

The Fairbanks Native Association held a meeting last Saturday to discuss a double-murder and suicide involving Native youth.

On January 13, 16-year-old Joshua Hjelm shot and killed John Charles Edward Esmailka, 18, and Daphne Sipary, 16, before turning the gun on himself. The incident occurred after a group of teens had been drinking, police said.

The incident heightened concerns among parents, elders and youth. Dozens turned out for the meeting to discuss ways to address suicide, substance abuse and violence.

Suggestions included more cultural activities, job training, athletic events, a teen shelter and a community/recreational center.
