Elder calls attention to epidemic of suicides

Five young people have committed suicide on or near the Sandy Bay Cree First Nation in northern Saskatchewan.

All the suicides were hangings. The most recent was a 15-year-old girl who was buried last weekend, CBC News reported.

Elder Cornelius Ballantyne said the epidemic calls for a suicide prevention program. He said young people on or near the reserve have no one to turn to if they need help.
