Senate Indian Affairs Committee hearing

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee is holding a hearing this Thursday on discussion draft legislation regarding the regulation of Class III gaming

Under then-chairman Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona), the committee held a series of hearing on gaming during the 109th Congress. But his bill to overhaul the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act never came up for a floor vote amid opposition from tribes. Another proposal to clarify the difference between Class III games like slot machines and Class II machines like bingo also faltered.

Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota) co-sponsored the IGRA amendments bill, which would have authorized the National Indian Gaming Commission to regulate Class III gaming. He also said he supported efforts to clear up Class III/Class II differences.
