Cayuga Nation continues ancestral land buys

The Cayuga Nation of New York has purchased more acreage within its ancestral territory.

The tribe just bought 8.5 acres in Cayuga County. The purchase comes less than a week after an 181-acre acquisition in Seneca County.

The tribe plans to ask the Bureau of Indian Affairs to place the land in trust. Under a proposed settlement with the state, the tribe would agree to ask for no more than 10,000 acres in the two counties.

The deal has run into opposition from local leaders and residents. They question why the state is settling the Cayuga land claim that was dismissed in federal court.
