INDN's List seeks to put more Indians in office

There are 65 Indians serving on state legislatures but INDN's List wants to put even more in office.

The Democratic group, founded by Kalyn Free of the Choctaw Nation, is showing tribal members how to run and win campaigns. Eighteen candidates and 27 future staff members are on the Morongo Reservation this week to participate in a campaign camp.

Last year, INDN's List backed 26 candidates, 20 of whom won their bids. "I'm pleased with the success we've had, but I'm also ambitious, too," Free told The San Bernardino Sun.

Joely De La Torre, an associate professor of public administration at Cal State San Bernardino, says tribal members should be heard in as many forums as possible. "I want to see more American Indians participating in school boards and water boards," she said.
