Grim explains reasons for withdrawing nomination

Charles Grim, the outgoing director of the Indian Health Service, said he withdrew his nomination for family reasons.

Grim, a member of the Cherokee Nation, and his wife have five children. Their youngest is 2 years old and he told Indian Country Today it was becoming too difficult to commute between Oklahoma, where his family lives, and Washington, D.C.

Grim denied that his withdrawal had anything to do with the White House's editing of his recent Senate testimony on the trust responsibility for health care. ''I didn't say something wrong at a hearing and then the president decided to withdraw my nomination," he told ICT

Grim joined the IHS in July 2003 and was renominated for a second term. He said he will be stepping down in 60 days.
