Town to vote on Mashpee Wampanoag deal

Voters in the town of Mashpee, Massachusetts, will vote April 7 on an agreement with the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe.

The tribe agreed to give up any land claims and agreed not to pursue any type of gaming in the town. In exchange, the town will support the tribe's land-into-trust application.

The tribe won federal recognition last May. The tribe is seeking to have land placed in trust in Mashpee and in the town of Middleboro, where a gaming facility is being proposed.

Prior to winning recognition, tribal leaders shunned elder Amelia Bingham, her son and two others because they sued the tribe in state court in hopes of getting a look at tribal finances. After a change in leadership, tribal members voted to rescind the shunning but a lawyer said the vote wasn't legal.
