Natives are 2 percent of HIV/AIDS in Minnesota

American Indians and Alaska Natives accounted for 2 percent of new HIV/AIDS cases in Minnesota, according to new state data.

In 2007, there were 6 new cases of HIV/AIDS among Native Americans. Five were Native women and 1 was a Native man.

The shows a decline from 2006, when 10 cases were reported among Native Americans. In that year, 8 were Native men and 2 were Native women.

Despite the decline, the rate of new HIV/AIDS infection among Native Americans in Minnesota was 7.4 per 100,000. That was the fourth highest rate among racial and ethnic groups.

American Indians and Alaska Natives make up about 1.2 percent of the state population.
