Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyoming), the vice chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, is still pushing to change the $3.4 billion settlement to the Indian trust fund lawsuit even as his controversial amendment has divided Indian Country.

Last month, Barrasso said he proposed the changes in response to concerns from tribes and individual Indians. But there is no consensus in Indian Country for the amendment and some tribes have said it will kill the settlement.

Barrasso told the Associated Press that the plaintiffs and the Obama administration have made changes to the settlement since it was announced last December. The parties have agreed to extend a deadline to wait for Congressional authorization but they did not make any material changes to the terms of the deal.

Barrasso told the AP he hopes the Senate will take up his proposal soon. The House passed the settlement last month without any changes.
