Navajo Nation president approves lease extension at power plant

Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly signed a lease extension for a coal-fired power plant on the New Mexico portion of the reservation.

Shelly said he wanted to protect jobs at the Four Corners Power Plant. The facility employs over 700 tribal members.

The 25-year extension gives the tribe $7 million a year from Arizona Public Service Co., with increases tied to inflation. That's in addition to about $65 million in taxes and $100 million in employment payroll generated by the plant.
