Cherokee Nation set for election for principal chief, deputy chief





Members of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma will go to the polls on June 25 to elect a principal chief and deputy chief.

Incumbent chief Chad Smith is running for re-election. His challenger is Bill John Baker.

Four candidates filed for deputy chief: S. Joe Crittenden, Raymond Vann, Callie Hathcoat and Chris Lee Soap. Incumbent Joe Grayson is not running -- he recently recovered from a heart attack.

Eight council seats are also up for election.
