Navajo man named as New Mexico Secretary of Indian Affairs

Arthur Allison, a member of the Navajo Nation, has been nominated as Secretary of Indian Affairs for New Mexico.

Allison is a business owner that provides security services on the reservation and in the Four Corners. He has worked on economic development issues for his tribe.

"As a businessman who hails from the Navajo Nation, Mr. Allison knows firsthand the challenges and opportunities facing Native Americans in New Mexico," Gov. Susana Martinez (R) said in a press release. "I look forward to working closely with him to maintain the important cultural influence that Native Americans make on the lives of all New Mexicans and to advance economic development and education in our tribal communities."

Former governor Bill Richardson (D) elevated the Indian Affairs position to the Cabinet level during his first term in office.
