New Mexico to name Native squash blossom as official necklace

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez (R) signed into law a bill that designates the squash blossom as the official state necklace.

The squash blossom necklace is common among artists from the Navajo Nation and Zuni Pueblo. The design, which typically features silver beads and turquoise, dates to the late 1800s, according to Americana Indian & Western Shows, an Indian art dealership.

The new law -- SB 109, Official State Necklace -- takes effect June 17.
