Shinnecock Nation holds first election after federal recognition

The Shinnecock Nation of New York held its first election since gaining federal recognition last October.

Randy King was re-elected to his sixth term on the board of trustees. He currently serves as chairman.

Gerrod Smith was elected to his first term on the board. He currently works in the tribe's finance office.

The third spot on the board will be determined by a run-off between incumbent Lance Gumbs and former trustee Fred Bess. This is the first time in more than 200 years that the tribe will hold a run-off, The Long Island Business News reported.
