New Hopi political group makes plans to remove chairman

A new group called the Hopi Silent Majority plans to remove the chairman of the Hopi Tribe.

The group says Chairman Leroy Shingoitewa has violated the Hopi constitution. Members say Shingoitewa has misinterpreted a tribal court opinion regarding the makeup of the tribal council and has allowed ineligible people to serve on the tribal council.

"It's obvious that there is a lot of community concern over Shingoitewa as chairman; the way he does business and how he does not provide clear information to his own people, and many are looking to see him removed from office," Steve Youvella said at the meeting, The Navajo-Hopi Observer reported.

Shingoitewa took office in January 2010.
