The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in California is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

Tribal members welcomed Catholicism to the reservation a century ago. The original church, known as St. Florian’s Indian Mission, was built on a sacred site where tribal leaders and spiritual elders had lived.

“This is our center,” Mildred “Millie” Browne, the chairwoman of the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum board, told The Palm Springs Desert Sun, referring to the significance of the church site.

The tribe is hosting a retreat May 17-19 in honor of the church's 100th birthday.
