Rosebud Sioux man puts welding talents to use at cemetery

Larry Cortez, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, is using his welding skills to help others.

Cortez is a student in the welding program at Southeast Technical College in Minnesota. As part of the program, he is welding new metal crosses at a cemetery on the Crow Creek Sioux Reservation in South Dakota.

“I’m not trying to get something out of it,” Cortez told The Winona Daily News. “It just gives you a good feeling to help your community.”

So far, Cortez has finished 20 crosses. He plans to replace as many at the cemetery as he can.
