Seminole Tribe pleased with USDA cattle branding system

The Seminole Tribe of Florida has been participating in a Department of Agriculture pilot program for cattle branding.

Instead of using hot-iron brands, the tribe labels each cow with a unique numerical ID that is stamped on an ear tag. "It's worked real well for us," tribal resource director Alex John told The Wall Street Journal.

John said the system makes it easier to track breeding, health and other information. But other ranchers are upset about the proposal by USDA to make the program mandatory.
