Man from Taos Pueblo questions tribe's taking of property

A man from Taos Pueblo in New Mexico says the tribe took property from him without just compensation.

Meko Concha says the tribe exercised eminent domain to seize the former Taos Pueblo Store building. The building was demolished in April.

"I'm not attacking their tribal sovereignty," Concha told The Taos News. "But they didn't follow the procedures. This was an illegal procedure, the way I see it."

The tribe condemned the building last year. Concha said he asked to be compensated but said the offer was inadequate.

The Indian Civil Rights Act bars tribes from taking "any property for a public use without just compensation."
