Eastern Cherokees narrow the field for chief and vice chief posts

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina held a primary election on Thursday.

For principal chief, incumbent Michell Hicks and Patrick Lambert were the top vote-getters. Hicks defeated Lambert for the post in 2007 by 13 votes.

For vice chief, incumbent Larry Blythe and council member Teresa McCoy received the most votes. They also faced each other in the 2007 election.

The general election takes place September 1.
