Cherokee Nation to run a second welcome center for Oklahoma

The Cherokee Nation is operating another welcome center for the state of Oklahoma.

The 4,200-square-foot facility along I-44 in east Tulsa will be renamed Cherokee Nation Welcome Center. The gift shop will include Cherokee art, jewelry and apparel.

"We are very intent on developing a superior cultural tourism program," Chief Chad Smith said at a press conference, The Tulsa World reported.

The Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department was about to close the center due to budget cuts. The tribe already operates another welcome center for the state in Kansas, Oklahoma.
