Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe's oldest member marks 100th

The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe of South Dakota celebrated the 100th birthday of its oldest member.

Lillian Beane was born on August 27, 1911, on the reservation. She attended an Indian mission school in Montana before returning home, where she graduated from Flandreau Indian School.

After earning a degree from the North Dakota State School of Science, she worked for the Indian Health Service and, later, the Bureau of Indian Affairs. After 32 years at the BIA, she retired in 1974.

Beane moved back to the reservation in 1986 and has attended every tribal meeting since.
