Sen. Reed doesn't want land-into-trust fix in appropriations bill

Sen. Jack Reed (D-Rhode Island) continues to oppose efforts to fix the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Carcieri v. Salazar.

Reed is the chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies. He has control over appropriations for Indian programs and he doesn't want the fix to be included in his bill.

"At this juncture, I think everybody around here is well aware of my opposition to the bill," Reed told The Providence Journal.

Last year, during the 111th Congress, the fix was included in an appropriations bill passed by the House. But it never passed the Senate.

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee has approved S.676, a bill that contains the fix, and has included the fix in S.703, the HEARTH Act. However, the House hasn't taken action on the fix.
