Arizona Republic runs series on American Indian traditions

The Arizona Republic is running a series this week on the traditions of tribes in Arizona.

The state is home to 21 federally recognized tribes. The series so far has looked at the Navajo Nation, the largest tribe in the state.

Sunday's story was about Chester Nez, the last of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers. He used the Navajo language to develop and transmit secret codes on behalf of the U.S. during World War II.

Today's story is a first-person account from reporter Betty Reid, who is Navajo. She talks about growing up on the reservation, where her family herded sheep.

A new story will be posed every day until Saturday. The Hopi Tribe, the Tohono O'odham Nation and the Apache tribes will be featured.
