Cherokee Nation to inaugurate new leader this Sunday

CORRECTION: The ceremony takes place on Sunday not on Saturday as previously posted.

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma will host a ceremonial inauguration for new Chief Bill John Baker on Sunday.

Baker defeated Chad Smith, the incumbent, for the post. He is the 26th principal chief of the tribe.

Chief Michell Hicks of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and Chief George Wickliffe of the United Keetoowah Band will join the ceremony, marking the first time all three federally-recognized Cherokee tribes have met for an inauguration.
