Everett Freeman, late Paskenta leader, to receive award

Everett Freeman, the late chairman of the Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians in California, will receive the 2011 Eagle Spirit Award from the American Indian Film Institute.

Freeman, who ran the tribe from 1994 until his death in 2010, was selected for his outstanding character and leadership. His efforts to restore the tribe's federal recognition are chronicled in the documentary, Paskenta: Nomlaqa Boda, that will be shown at AIFI's 36th annual film festival on Sunday.

Freeman's son, the current chairman Andrew Freeman, will accept the award on his behalf.
