Editorial: Address racism against Natives in South Dakota

"Racism remains an issue in our community and state.

You might see and hear it less often, but it’s there - in offhand comments and jokes from family and friends, from anonymous commenters on the Internet, in the fear of certain areas of town deemed undesirable, and in the KKK leaflets recently left around Rapid City stores.

In an area with such a large Native American population, we have an opportunity to teach tolerance.

Opportunities present themselves almost daily, from teaching our children that traditional Native clothing is part of their culture and not a costume for Halloween to lectures and workshops put on by universities and civic organizations."
