Governor will sign bill to eliminate 'Fighting Sioux' nickname

Gov. Jack Dalrymple (R) will sign a bill that will eliminate the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo at the University of North Dakota.

The bill to eliminate the name passed the Senate on Tuesday and the House today. It requires UND to choose a new name and logo but not until January 1, 2015, at the earliest.

The NCAA declared the nickname and logo to be "hostile and abusive." A settlement gave UND a chance to secure approval from the the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.

The Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation voted to approve the name but the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe remains in opposition.
