Letter: 'Fighting Sioux' supporters must work through their grief

"Perhaps it is time for all those who wish for an endless life of the UND Fighting Sioux nickname to start using the Seven Stages of Grief.

An agreement was made long ago that the Sioux nickname would be retired if certain conditions couldn’t be fulfilled. The university administration has worked on keeping UND in the NCAA and finding a home for its Division 1 athletic programs; given that the above mentioned conditions were not fulfilled, the administrators understand that the day is coming when they no longer can use the logo or nickname.

But many people have not yet reached that same level of acceptance.

For example, the North Dakota legislators who want to enshrine the nickname in state law still are in Stage 3, “anger and bargaining.” Many others are in Stage 4, “depression.”

What needs to be done is for businesses, clubs and the Herald to move on to at least Stage 5, “the upward turn.” "
