Cochiti Pueblo prepares evacuation plan due to threat from fire

Leaders of Cochiti Pueblo in northern New Mexico are preparing an evacuation plan in case the growing Las Conchas Fire comes closer to the reservation.

The fire is approaching the northern edge of the reservation. The Pueblo de Cochiti Golf Course and Cochiti Lake are safe so far but tribal leaders are worried.

"We're taking proactive measures, developing an evacuation plan on and off the reservation, depending on how severe the fire is," Lt. Gov. Dwight Mody told The Santa Fe New Mexican.

The fire has led to the closure of Bandelier National Monument and Los Alamos National Laboratory. The residents of nearby towns have been evacuated.

"This one, there's an uncomfortable feeling about it," Mody told the paper. He said the tribe is worried about elderly residents and others with health problems.
