Phyliss J. Anderson wins election as Mississippi Choctaw chief

Phyliss J. Anderson won election as chief of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, according to unofficial results.

Anderson will be the first woman to lead the tribe. She defeated incumbent Beasley Denson by 2,011 votes to 1,523.

"My administration will represent all tribal people," Anderson said in a victory speech, The Jackson Clarion-Ledger reported. "It is a very good day in Choctaw, Mississippi."

The election was the second time Anderson defeated Denson. The results of the first vote, however, were invalidated by the tribal council.
