Town on Crow Reservation slowly recovering after difficulties

The only incorporated town on the Crow Reservation in Montana is slowly recovering after being hit by major flooding and a series of violent crimes.

The flooding in May caused significant damage to homes and businesses in Lodge Grass. Troubles continued in the fall, when four people were murdered in October and November, and a violent suspect fled to the reservation in November.

“We always read about it someplace else, but when it’s right here in your community, it’s a different deal,” John Small, the principal of Lodge Grass High and the school district’s interim superintendent, told The Billings Gazette.

Crow Chairman Cedric Black Eagle and Lodge Grass Mayor Henry Speelman are hoping things will turn around with more law enforcement presence in the town. The FBI has agreed to dedicate more agents to the reservation and to the Northern Cheyenne Reservation.
