Kateri Tekakwitha, Mohawk woman, to be canonized as saint

Kateri Tekakwitha, a Mohawk woman who lived in the 1600s, will become a saint.

Tekakwitha has been credited with numerous miracles. But it was the curing of a Lummi Nation boy, Jake Finkbonner, of a flesh-eating virus that led Pope Benedict XVI to approve canonization for Tekakwitha.

The ceremony is expected to take place this year. Tekakwitha is the first Native woman to achieve sainthood.
