Oregon Board of Education to debate use of Indian mascots
Posted: Wednesday, February 22, 2012
Indian mascots are on the agenda when the Oregon Board of Education
meets next month.
A Department of Education advisory committee recommended getting rid of all Indian mascots and imagery by September 2011. But the deadline has come and gone without substantial action.
"As a community, we were very hopeful that this incredibly racist practice would be discontinued," Nichole Maher, the executive director of the Native American Youth and Family Center
, told The Oregonian.
The board meeting takes place March 8-9 and is open to the public.
