Levon Helm, singer/drummer from The Band, passes on

Levon Helm, the singer and drummer for The Band, a group formed with Mohawk singer/songwriter Robbie Robertson, died on Thursday. He was 71.

Helm was part Chickasaw on his father's side, The New York Times reported. After being a part of one of the most acclaimed groups of the late 1960s and 1970s, he had a falling out with Robertson although the two appeared to reconcile recently.

"Levon is one of the most extraordinary talented people I’ve ever known and very much like an older brother to me. I am so grateful I got to see him one last time and will miss him and love him forever," Robertson said in a note on Facebook.
